Hugh M. Cartwright (1943-2011) was born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, on October 22, 1943. He became a Christian in his thirteenth year and later spoke of that time when “grace enabled me to entrust myself to Christ” when he left all his “reputation in the care of One who is able to keep that which I have committed unto him in view of the great day of judgment.” He was ordained in the Free Church of Scotland in 1969 and was the minister of the congregation in Ferintosh until 1990 when he was called to serve as Professor of Church History and Church Principles at the Free Church College, Edinburgh. In 1998, with no end to the intensifying crisis in the Free Church, he left to join the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, where preaching once again became his first work at the congregation in Gilmore Place, Edinburgh where he remained until he death.

We are to consider largely then in Philippians, chapter 1, and particularly, verse 21; the epistle to the Philippians, chapter 1, and verse 21. “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” The Apostle Paul was in prison in Rome, because of his faithfulness in his testimony to Christ, and he’s writing this letter to the Philippians from prison. And you’ll notice that there is very little about his physical conditions in the prison. What he is more concerned about are the spiritual implications of his imprisonment, and the effect of his imprisonment upon the cause of Christ, and upon the church of Christ.
